International Scottish reggae band coming to Uganda next week

After the visit of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, it seems the angel of favour camped pitch in Uganda. While the arrival of American rapper 50 Cent is expected, well according to rumours, we have been reliably informed that Scottish band will be in the country next week!

Founded in 2000, Mungo Hi Fi, a Glasgow-based sound system and production unit which follows the original Jamaican sound system tradition will be in the country for a set of two concerts slated for November 9 and 10 in Kampala and Jinja respectively.

According to sources, the band will also collaborate with Ugandan acts including Ziggy Dee, Cindy thus saving our artistes from going on ‘collabo begging mode’ as was the case when Kanye West was here.

This will be the band’s second visit to Uganda after making an appearance at Nyege Nyege Festival in 2015.

Who are Mungo Hifi

Today Mungo’s is a global operation with six members: all committed to spreading their philosophy of serious, seismic productions plus easy going democratic dancehall fun. Highly collaborative, they’ve worked with everyone from Sugar Minott and Ranking Joe in Jamaica to Major Lazer in America, Kenny Knots and Solo Banton in England, and Scotland’s Soom T.

So far they’ve released nine albums featuring an ensemble of talented artists. All combine a keen sense of history with a wicked creative streak and some industrial strength drum ‘n’ bass.

For their 2018 East African tour, Mungo’s are sending their top producer Tom as an ambassador DJ, along with their newest star vocalist, Eva Lazarus. Tom is one of the original duo who founded the system, so this is a great honour! Mungo’s have worked in East Africa before and recorded a mixtape in Nairobi in 2015, with Nazizi, Blessed San, the UK’s Charlie P and several other EA MCs.

Besides the live shows, Tom is going to be working at East African Records’s studio on a new set of recordings for 2018. Eva Lazarus is a singer/rapper from Bristol who made a name for herself on the reggae/dancehall circuit in the UK before hooking up with Mungo’s. Their work together resulted in the beautiful heartbreak track “Amsterdam” and the dancehall smasher “Live My Life” based on a classic 1990s Jamaican riddim.

The last Mungo’s tour in 2015 was a smash hit, with sell-out shows in Nairobi and Kilifi and a headline appearance at the first ever NyegeNyege.
